Surroundings of Villa Olivio

The Datca peninsula

The quiet fisherman village Datca is located approximately 65 kilometers from Marmaris. Datca, with just 8000 inhabitants, is on a peninsula surrounded by nature. Its location is unique: North of the peninsula is the Aegean Sea and the South the Mediterranean Sea. From the peninsula you have a panoramic view on the Greek islands Kos, Simi and Rhodos.

Datca is not yet discovered by mainstream tourism because there is no airport nearby. Here you can taste the real Turkey in Datca.

The village is famous for its high oxygen level in the air and the low humidity. Even in the hottest summer months, a gentle breeze will allow for a pleasant stay. The sea and the coast line are stunningly beautiful. In the village itself you can find a little beach and there are plenty quiet little bays where you can enjoy the peace and beauty.

Eski Datca

When you are in Datca you can visit the natural hot water spring in the center of Datca. This little lake feeds a small waterfall, where between 4000 and 5000 liters of water flow into the sea every minute. The hot water allows you to swim also in the coldest winter months. On Friday and Saturday a visit to the weekly market is certainly worthwhile; in this market you can buy cheap vegetables, fruits and clothing. "Eski Datca" or Old Datca is located 4km from Datca. Historically this was the old centre of Datca. Walking around there will give you the idea that you are going back in time by centuries! Walking down the narrow streets, you can enjoy the old architecture of the houses which has remained intact.

Cnidus (Cnidos)

On the far end of the peninsula lie remains of the Doric harbor town Cnidus. In antiquity ships had to wait here for a favorable wind. The small harbor was often packed with ships. One of them was the ship that brought Paulus from Palestine to Rome. You can still recognize the (Southern) trade port including the docks for war ships. Furthermore parts of a market square, a necropolis, one town wall and two theatres have been preserved as well as the bases of a round temple, which housed the statue of Aphrodite of Cnidus. This attracted visitors from the entire Roman realm. Cnidus lies 40 km from Datca. One option is to take the boat which leaves in the morning from Datca to return there at the end of the afternoon. Each season has its own diversity and beauty of flowers and plants. As complete mountains are coloured by wild daisies and culverts, we feel that the months of March and April are the most beautiful.

Day trips from Datca

From Datca there are several excursions:

  • A visit to one of the Greek islands: Kos, Simi or Rhodos. Regular departures from Datca city by boat.
  • A day trip to the Turkish bathing resort Bodrum (in the summer you can take the ferry boat which operates every day).
  • A day trip to the Turkish bathing resort Marmaris.
  • A visit to Cnidus, where you can find the ruins of an old Roman city.
  • A boat excursion to the beautiful coast of the peninsula.
  • A visit to "Eski Datca" (old Datca).
  • A visit to the antique Kaunos with its rocky burial tombs and the turtle island in Dalyan.

And there are lots of water sport possibilities such as sailing, surfing, and kite flying.

In the direct surroundings of villaolivio many interesting things can be done. First of all there are beautiful beaches. On below picture you see Hayitbuku, this “harbor” is only 1.5km away from villaolivio. People who are sailing between the Greece islands or along the Turkish coast often visit this place. Every day you see different boats from different countries. Hayitbuku has a nice sandy beach, and is never too crowded. There are some typical Turkish little restaurants situated at the beach.

3 kilometers from Villaolivio you can find Avlana. A small Turkish village with around 40 houses and in the middle there is another Olive oil factory. The village takes you back in time and its really worth a visit.

A beautiful way along the coast brings you from Mesudiye to Yakakoy. A village on the Knidos way. In Yakakoy there is Yakamengen. An restored Olive oil factory which inspired us to buy villaolivio. Lunch is very nice!
